China – as vigorous in its pursuit of enlightened prisoner rehabilitation as it is to producing unintentionlly ironic propaganda – has begun giving inmates the opportunity to do courses on Confucius and Sigmund Freud. This will assist prisoners to ”cultivate virtues and adopt good behaviour.” Confucius I can understand: authoritarian, traditionalist, virtuous, punctual. Might be a few unintended consequences with Freud though – particularly after prisoners come to realise all their problems can be linked back to their excessively Confucian childhoods.
